The Seva Pledge

I take this pledge freely and sincerely:

  1. I will treat every person with dignity — the guard, the helper, the vendor, the sweeper — no matter what they earn or wear. मैं हर व्यक्ति के साथ सम्मान से पेश आऊँगा/आऊँगी — चौकीदार, सहायक, विक्रेता, सफाईकर्मी — चाहे उनकी कमाई या पहनावा कुछ भी हो।
  2. I will not waste food. What I cannot finish, I will share or pack — not throw away. मैं भोजन बर्बाद नहीं करूँगा/करूँगी। जो नहीं खा सकता/सकती, उसे बाँटूँगा/बाँटूँगी या पैक करूँगा/करूँगी।
  3. I will give through trusted, registered organisations rather than encouraging begging — especially where children are involved. मैं भीख को बढ़ावा देने के बजाय पंजीकृत संस्थाओं के माध्यम से मदद करूँगा/करूँगी — खासकर जहाँ बच्चे शामिल हों।
  4. I will help someone learn or earn, not only receive — a skill, a book, a school fee, a job reference. मैं किसी को सिर्फ़ देने के बजाय सीखने या कमाने में मदद करूँगा/करूँगी — कोई हुनर, किताब, फीस या नौकरी की सिफ़ारिश।
  5. I will pay fair wages on time to everyone who works for me, and speak to them with respect. जो भी मेरे लिए काम करता है, उसे समय पर उचित मज़दूरी दूँगा/दूँगी और आदर से बात करूँगा/करूँगी।
  6. I will never photograph or post a person receiving my help without asking them first. मदद पाने वाले व्यक्ति की तस्वीर बिना पूछे न लूँगा/लूँगी, न साझा करूँगा/करूँगी।
  7. I will do at least one act of seva every month — quietly, without expecting recognition. मैं हर महीने कम से कम एक सेवा कार्य करूँगा/करूँगी — चुपचाप, बिना किसी प्रशंसा की अपेक्षा के।

How to Help Well

Good intentions are not always good help. A few things worth knowing before you give.

Give through registered organisations

An organisation with 12A and 80G registration files returns, can be checked, and reaches people you never will. It also means your money is far less likely to fund organised begging rings. Ask for the registration number — a genuine trust will give it happily.

Be careful with child begging

Children begging at signals are very often controlled by someone else, and money handed over keeps them there instead of in school. Food, or a call to Childline 1098, helps far more than a coin does.

Help someone earn

One school fee, one skill course, one tool kit, one honest job reference — these change a family's direction in a way that repeated small handouts cannot. Ask what would actually help before deciding what to give.

Protect people's dignity

Do not photograph someone receiving help and post it for likes. If you want to share the cause, share the cause — not the person's face. And always ask first.

Start at home

Fair wages paid on time, a proper place to sit and eat, leave when someone is unwell, and being spoken to by name. The people who work in your home and office are the easiest place to begin, and the one most often skipped.

Waste less food

Order what you will finish. Pack what is left. At weddings and functions, arrange in advance with a food-rescue group instead of deciding at midnight when everything is already in the bin.

Small Things That Actually Count

You do not need money or free time to start. You need to notice.

TODAY Learn the names
The guard, the delivery rider, the person who cleans your floor. Using someone's name instead of "bhaiya" or "arre" costs nothing and changes the whole exchange.
TODAY Offer water and a seat
Anyone who comes to your door in the afternoon — courier, plumber, meter reader. In an Indian summer this is not a small thing at all.
THIS WEEK Pay one school fee
Ask your house help or your society's staff whether any child's fee is pending. It is usually a few thousand rupees, and it is often the reason a child stops going.
THIS WEEK Give what you don't use
Warm clothes before winter, not after. School bags before the session, not in December. Timing decides whether a donation is useful or just moved from your cupboard to theirs.
THIS MONTH Refer someone for work
A driver, a cook, an electrician, a data entry operator. One honest reference from you is worth more than a month of charity, and costs you a single message.
ALWAYS Don't bargain over small money
The twenty rupees you save from a vegetable vendor or an auto driver matters far more to them than to you. Bargain with brands, not with people carrying their shop on their head.

Check the organisation before you give

Every registered charity in India files with the Income Tax Department. Before donating, ask the organisation for its PAN and 80G registration number, then verify it yourself on the official Income Tax portal. It takes a minute, and it is the single most useful habit a donor can build.

Is the certificate really free?

Yes. Taking the pledge and downloading the certificate is completely free. No payment, no login, no hidden charge.

Do you collect donations?

No. We never ask for money and we do not forward money to anyone. This is an awareness campaign by an education platform. Where you give is entirely your decision.

Why does the pledge discourage giving money to beggars?

It does not discourage helping — it asks you to help in a way that actually reaches the person. Begging at signals, particularly by children, is frequently organised by someone who takes the money. Giving food, or giving through a registered organisation, avoids funding that system. If a child seems to be in danger, Childline 1098 is free and available 24 hours.

Why should I not post photos of people I help?

Because the person in the photo rarely had a real choice about it, and a photograph taken in someone’s worst moment follows them for years. If you want to raise awareness, share the cause and not the face. If you do want to share a photo, ask first and accept no as an answer.

Can my school, college or company use this?

Yes. Students, staff and employees can each take the pledge and download their own certificate. It works well alongside a CSR day, an NSS activity, or a Daan Utsav week.
